Analgesia (Pain Relief) and Rehabilitation

Pain relief such as paracetamol can help ease the pain being felt but do need to be taken regularly to feel the full effects. It is important that the instructions from the packet are followed.

Anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen can help with swelling however it is not advised to take these within 48 hours of an initial injury as it may slow down the healing process. Follow the instructions on the packet and discuss using them safely with a pharmacist if you are unsure and especially if you have any underlying health conditions.

Up to date guidelines can be found on the NHS website:

Ibuprofen

Paracetamol

Other medicines can help to reduce inflammation, swelling and pain. You should discuss this with your GP if the simple pain relief advice does not help or you are taking it beyond the recommended length as advised on the packet.
